The tickets for the ISAF Youth World Championship in Istanbul, the titles in four junior classes and the Young Europeans Sailing titles have been awarded. After three days of sailing of all kinds - calm, sun, wind and rain - the Kiel Junior Week ended on Whit Monday.
Around 800 sailors from eight nations sailed 63 races and crowned their champions. "The crowds showed that the focus on young talent was the right decision," said Head of Organisation Jobst Richter from the Kiel Yacht Club. A total of 565 boats were registered for the eleven classes, including surfers on RS:X and Bic Techno 293 boards for the first time. With the qualification for the ISAF Youth World Championship in Istanbul from 8 to 17 July in seven disciplines and the youth and junior championships in four classes, the German Sailing Association and the class associations had significantly upgraded the Young Europeans Sailing (YES) in Kiel.
After Saturday's austerity programme - three classes sailed one race - the first preliminary decisions were made on Whit Sunday in bright sunshine and perfect 4 to 6 Beaufort. All classes were able to complete four races. On Whit Monday, rain rounded off the variety of weather in Kiel. In six classes, there was more at stake than just the YES victory. The Laser men, Laser Radial women and RS:X surfers were also competing for tickets to the ISAF Youth World Championship and for German Youth/Junior titles, the 420s and 29ers for an ISAF Youth World Championship ticket, and the junior surfers on the Bic Techno 293 surfboard also for the German U17 Youth Championship. While the YES winners were able to celebrate on site, the potential Youth World Championship participants still have to wait for the official nomination by the German Sailing Federation.
420s
The 420er was extremely exciting. Berliners Svenja Weger/Wiebke Lechler, who like Diesch/Tiegel are members of the IMMAC Sailing Team, edged out their colleagues by a wafer-thin margin in the battle for the ISAF Youth World Championship ticket. Sophia Diesch/Caroline Tiegel (WYC/Friedrichshafen) had travelled to Kiel with a nine-point lead from the first qualifying round. But Weger/Lechler were too strong in Kiel. With places 2,1,5 and 4, they only added twelve points to their qualifying account and that was enough to oust Diesch/Tiegel by one point.
The boys' ticket to the ISAF World Championship was secured by Malte Winkel/Lucas Thielemann (SYC/Schwerin/Zapel-Hof), who were already clear leaders after the first qualifying series. They kept Vincent Dürr/Kurt Siegfried Schaller (Wismar) and Gordon Nickel/Daniel Hoffmann (Stade) at bay.
The Dutch duo Max Deckers/Duko Bos won the YES title by one point ahead of the two German ISAF Youth World Championship participants Weger/Lechler and Winkel/Thielemann.
The defending champions from Switzerland, Sebastiano Baranzini/Matteo Colombo (16 years), took eighth place. The 2009 European Opti champion, Maximilian Hibler, came 19th with his brother on the foresheet, Philipp Hibler.
The double European champion in the Opti, Paulina Rothlauf, who has been sailing in the 420 together with Malden Geisler (Munich) since last autumn, is feeling her way around the two-man dinghy this year and finished 38th out of 111 starters.
Incidentally, 16 Swiss boats also took part in the 420. With a total of 18 boats, the Swiss made up the second largest group in Kiel, led by former Bavarian national coach Thomas Reulein.
29er
In the 29er, Kiel's talented youngster Paul Kohlhoff (14 years old) and Tim Krämer gave the favourites Justus Schmidt/Max Boehme (KYC/Schönwalde/Kiel) a run for their money on Sunday. Kohlhoff emphasised his skills with three victories on Sunday. But in the end, routine won out: Schmidt/Boehme won the YES title with an eleven-point lead over Philipp Müller/Moritz Janich (Wörthsee), the brothers Philipp and Thilo Kramer from Munich and the best girls' crew, Jule and Lotta Görge (Kiel), who thus secured their ticket to the ISAF World Championships in July off Istanbul (Turkey). The Kiel twins Jule and Lotta Görge (KYC) had already laid the foundation for qualification in this mixed class in the first elimination series. The two 17-year-olds are currently living at a sports boarding school in Aarhus (Denmark), where they closely combine education and sport with 140 other athletes, including the English national handball team.
RS:X
Niclas Sponholz (Berlin), Nicolas Götzke (Immenstaad) and Benedikt Hattich (Lübeck) fought a board-to-board battle in the surfers (RS:X 8.5 square metres), who held their only elimination series for the ISAF Youth World Championship in Kiel. In the end, Sponholz came out on top with 39 points. Six points behind him was Götzke (45), two more behind Hattich (47). This also corresponds to the order of the German Youth Championships. In the girls' competition, Luise Albrecht (Berlin) came out on top against Lisa Riske (Wense).
The YES title was won by 22-year-old Florian Freimüller (Altenholz), who sailed a lonely course at the head of the field and deservedly won with six race wins.
A tendon irritation in her hand forced German Olympic hopeful Moana Delle (2007 Youth World Champion and 2009 Kiel Week winner) to pull out after three races on Sunday. "I'm going to the doctor today, he'll decide whether I can go to Medemblik or not. I definitely want to compete in Kiel Week. That's more important to me," said Moana Delle. The strongest competitor in the battle for the Olympic ticket, 2000 silver medallist Amelie Lux (Kiel), also had to retire on Sunday after two races. "Amelie is still suffering from the effects of an infection. Two races a day are enough at the moment," said DSV national surfing coach Diederik Bakker, who travelled to the next regatta in Holland on Monday evening. "There are higher goals than YES this year," said Bakker, who supported his surfer's decision to sit out.
Bic Techno 293
On the junior surfboard Bic Techno 293, 21 competitors battled it out for the German U-17 Youth Championship. After an exciting race, Felix Feser (Berlin) came out on top against Felix Jöhnk from Eckernförde and Tim Poggemann (Bad Endorf), securing the first YES title awarded on the Bic Techno board with eight points. As all of the starters were under 17 years old, the YES run-in also corresponded to the German Youth Championship.
Lasse Mannsbarth (Kiel) won the U-15 age group ahead of Tim Lindner (Berlin) and Jan Schwidetzky (Teltow).
Laser radial:
In the Laser Radial girls, Franziska Goltz and Lisa Fasselt from Kiel are fighting bow to bow for the YES title. With three first and two second places, the title rightly went to Franziska Goltz. Anke Helbig came third.
Lisa Rattemeyer (Kiel) secured the junior title in fourth place overall ahead of Anja Weick (Berlin/18) in sixth place overall.
Chiara Steinmüller (Berlin/37), who had already represented Germany last year and finished eleventh in Brazil, won the battle for a World Championship ticket thanks to her clear lead from the first qualification series. Eighth place in Kiel was enough for the Berlin native. "It's a nice feeling to get a second chance," said Steinmüller after the qualifying decision. Constanze Stolz (Düsseldorf), who will represent Germany at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore (14 to 26 August), finished ninth in Kiel.
Sebastian Bühler (DTYC/Günzburg) secured his World Championship ticket at the second attempt in the junior men's event. The Günzburg native had narrowly missed out on the ticket last year, finishing second to Fabian Gielen. Bühler went into the race with a 42-point lead after the first series and defended his advantage against his closest colleague, Florian Haufe (NRV Hamburg), who had secured his ticket for the Youth Olympic Games YOG (14 to 26 August/Singapore). With an impressive series of two first and four second places, Haufe emphasised his skills, won the Young Europeans Sailngs and gives the DSV hope for the Olympic Games in Singapore.
Laser
In the Laser, defending champion Simon Grotelüschen (23/LYC/Kiel) shook up the field. Last year's winner and 7th at the Sailing World Cup in Melbourne (Australia) only sailed to first and second places. B squad sailor Malte Kamrath (24) had to settle for third place behind Frithjof Schwerdt (22).
Patrick Follmann (Munich) won the German Junior Championship (U22) ahead of Johannes Glitzky (Berlin) and Nils Herrmann (Berlin). Max Kohlhoff from Kiel secured the title of U-19 Youth Champion ahead of Lukas Feuerherdt (Brandenburg) and Linus Goericke (MSC Hamburg).
505s
Danish Dynamite dominated the 505: The Danes Morten Ramsbaek/Jan Saugmann (2007 World Champions) won with three victories and two second places ahead of the 16-time Kieler Woche winners Jacob and Jörgen Bojsen-Möller.
The Kiel Week record winner, Dr Wolfgang Hunger (17 wins), with Julien Kleiner did not find his form. This was emphasised by a capsize on Sunday. In the end, the reigning Kieler Woche winners also had to let Meike Schomäker (with Hunger's long-time foresailor and 505 specialist Holger Jess from Wittensee), Jens Findel/Johannes Tellen (Kiel), the brothers Martin and Rainer Görge (Kiel), Steffan Köchlin/Andreas Achterberg (Kiel) and Tim Böger/Markus Schöner (Hamburg) go first.
Pirate
Sascha Schröter/Holger Hoff (Berlin), who won three races, prevailed over Svenja Thoreo with veteran Karsten Bredt (Hamburg/2 race wins) in the Pirate category, which is traditionally spread over four to five major events over Whitsun. A series of measurement protests caused a longer shift on Sunday evening.
Europe
In the up-and-coming Europe class (85 starters), Moritz Kuralt (Essen) secured victory with a one-point lead over Stine Paeper (MSC/Hamburg).
Laser 4.7
Lukas Eisele (Kiel) won the Laser 4.7, the smallest of the Lasers, ahead of Johann Kohlhoff and Timm Lasse Schöning (all KYC/Kiel). The class was competing in Kiel for the first time and had 29 entries.
The Young Europeans Sailing (YES) off Kiel-Schilksee has focussed entirely on junior and dinghy classes since 2009. "Our aim is to give the events a clear profile. Over Whitsun, we want to offer Kiel Week for young sailors for junior classes only," says Head of Organisation Jobst Richter, who banned the keelboat classes last year and concentrated the YES on nine classes. "Our aim for the future is to include interesting classes for young sailors that complement our programme with the DSV youth classes at Whitsun. We are also prepared to experiment," said Richter, who took the plunge this year and was rewarded with 565 entries.
The events on the water were framed by an extensive land programme. Thanks to the support of sponsor Autohaus Kath, the programme of previous years was significantly expanded. In addition, the weather on Whitsunday was perfect, so that spectators and visitors made a pilgrimage to Schilksee and enjoyed the wind and sun.
The companies Elkline, Höhenflug, Maritim Bootszubehör and Surfshop Secret Spot from Kiel were delighted to welcome numerous customers. Whether Touareg, Caddy, VW bus or Q5 - visitors also took the opportunity to test drive one of these VW and Audi models.
The active sailors continued the sporting competition on land with the trendy sports of speedminton (badminton without a net or court, but much faster and harder) and blokart. Some of the young sailors are also hoping for a rematch in these disciplines next year.
